I'll be honest, I love Ahrefs. It's presumably my most loved backlink checker (it's at present in a bind with Majestic). With Ahrefs, you can check your links on all of your sites (and those of your competitors) in one place, both for free and for premium users. You can also track traffic sources, search engine rankings, and page-level stats for individual pages...you name it! Here are some of my favorite features of Ahrefs.

You can then use Ahrefs (or another tool) to dig deeper into their top incoming links, but first, try doing a Google search for some of them. Do any of them link out? What about other mentions of your site online? While it might be nice if someone out there was referring people to your work just because they thought it was fantastic, it’s probably more likely that you have annoyed someone along the way.

Ahrefs is one of my favorite free backlink checkers. It’s easy to use and it has a lot of features that let you do some great analysis of your backlinks. It shows where your links are coming from, which pages are linking to you, what anchor text they’re using (and whether or not it’s relevant), how many external links there are on a page, and even how hard it would be for Google to index that page. It also lets you add up all these factors for a site as a whole so you can see who really is your biggest link partner.
Who else connections to different pages on your site?
If you have a large site, your visitors may have difficulty finding what they’re looking for. One solution is to offer direct links from your pages (internal links) that point directly to other areas of your site. You can check if you already have these by using a backlink checker tool like Ahrefs. Just enter one of your URLs into Ahrefs, scroll down on its dashboard, and click on backlinks in the left sidebar. If no links appear, add some. When done adding them all, scroll back up to see how many incoming links are present at that point—click more beneath each column header if you don't see them displayed yet.

To learn what people are saying about your site on different social media channels, there’s no better tool than a backlink checker like Ahrefs. While Google Webmaster Tools can give you an idea of how many people are linking to your site (from which domains), Ahrefs gives you some actionable data around where those links are coming from, when they were published, etc. To get even more value out of a tool like Ahrefs, be sure to export all of that data into Excel or a similar spreadsheet program and analyze it later for patterns. You may notice big spikes in traffic for certain days or articles that correspond with big bursts in new links from particular sites.
